42 Japan Travel Outfit Ideas That Actually Make Sense

Japan is one of my favorite countries to travel to. I’d been working there for many years before becoming a fashion writer. I traveled to many prefectures while I was there. I observed Japan’s fashion closely.

Many people have asked me this question: What should I wear in Japan? Japan’s fashion reflects simplicity and sophistication. It’s one of the places where the outfit matters. In Japan, what you wear stands out. The streets of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka look like open-air runways.

You will want to look put together, but you also need to stay comfy while you move from one temple to the next and grab food along the way.

In this post, I’m sharing 42 outfit ideas to help you plan your Japan travel wardrobe – for both cooler months and warmer seasons. Save your favorites for later and keep reading.

1. Long Coat, Turtleneck, and Jeans

A long coat is one of Japan’s wardrobe staples. You can’t afford to miss this when it’s cold there. This outfit is comfy for long walks as well as chic. You can wear sneakers, chunky boots, or UGGs to finish this look.

2. Beige Knit Matching Set

She is wearing a matching sweater and seatpants with a blank crop top. As you can see, this outfit is so flexible. You can put on or take off the sweater according to the surroundings.

3. Fur Vest and Black Mini Skirt

Mini skirts – another fashion staple of Japan. If you want a little cute outfit, put a mini skirt on with a fur vest and a turtleneck – that’s it. Don’t forget to add tights to keep yourself warm, and it looks put together with sneakers.

4. White Cropped Jacket and Black Mini Dress

A black mini dress is always a good idea. If it’s cold, add tights. To level it up, throw on a white cropped jacket. The contrast looks clean and sharp. You can wear this from daytime exploring to dinner at night without changing much.

5. Sweatshirt and Wide-Leg Jeans

Some days you just want to wear a sweatshirt, and that’s fine. Pair it with wide leg jeans and do a slight front tuck. It keeps the outfit from looking lazy. You’ll stay comfortable even after walking all day.

6. Matching Sweat Set and Baseball Cap

There will be days when you don’t want to think too much about your outfit. A matching sweat set solves that. It looks coordinated without trying hard. Add a baseball cap, especially on travel days or early mornings.

7. Beige Double-Breasted Coat, Striped Top, and Jeans

This is the quintessential, timeless look that fits in anywhere in the world. A striped top, some dark jeans and a nice beige coat. It’s clean, simple and you can’t look like you’re trying too hard.

8. Polo Shirt and Wide-Leg Jeans

Swap out a basic t-shirt for a polo. It’s basically the same level of comfort but the collar gives it a slightly more polished look. This is a go-to uniform for wandering around in.

9. T-Shirt and Tailored Trousers

Jeans can be so stiff! If you want to avoid jeans, consider tailored trousers with an elastic waist (so they fit all day). A plain white t-shirt looks surprisingly stylish when tucked into your trousers (as long as they fit well).

10. Red Ribbed Sweater and Cream Wide-Leg Trousers

If you wanna pop in your photos, pack a red sweater. It looks lovely paired with cream wide-leg trousers. Imagine this on a chilly afternoon with the fall foliage behind you or in a serene bamboo forest.

11. Beige Button-Up Cardigan and White Mini Skirt

src: instagram.com/hellooaita

This cardigan is so soft and pretty for spring. A beige button-up cardigan can be worn as a shirt with a skirt (white or any other color) for a cute and casual spring look. (Only go for white ankle boots if you’ve already broken them in! Anything else and you’ll get blisters all day.)

12. Black Sleeveless Turtleneck and Gray Mini Skirt

src: instagram.com/ilaria.brusa

This has a cool, modern feel and an edgy vibe. A sleeveless turtleneck gives you a great neck line without overheating and looks great paired with some dark jeans (and a grayish skirt and boots if there’s room).

13. Puffer Jacket and Leggings

If you’re going to Japan in January or February, the goal is to survive. A puffer jacket and thick fleece leggings get the job done. It’s functional, blocks the wind, and most locals are wearing the same outfit.

14. White Oversized Puffer Jacket and Cream Wide-Leg Pants

src: instagram.com/j_hsiao

If you’re going to wear a puffer jacket, you might as well make it “fashion”. Go for monochrome: an oversized white puffer jacket with cream colored wide-leg pants. It’s a adorable, cozy look.

15. Floral Midi Dress and Cardigan

If you’re going in Spring or Fall, a midi dress is a must-have. It’s flowy, it’s easy-to-wear and looks stunning in temple gardens. Just make sure to carry a cardigan in your purse as temperatures drop at sundown.

16. Black Halter Top and White Maxi Pants

For a sweltering hot, humid summer adventure, you want clothes that keep you as cool as possible. Wide leg pants are a must; they breathe. A black halter top is a little bit sexy, a lot stylish. It’s comfy but it’s a look you really put together.

17. Black Leather Jacket and Black Wide-Leg Pants

You can’t go wrong with all black. A leather jacket, black pants and you have the “cool kid” uniform in Tokyo. Plus, it gets dirty on the subway and it looks great all day/night.

18. White Cable Knit Sweater and White Mini Skirt

Adorably. White sweater over white skirt. If you feel too fluffy, add a black leather jacket and some black tights to roughen it out a bit.

19. Black Puffer Jacket and Black Pants

src: instagram.com/kaylanellaa

Again, practical winter wear. All black makes it not so puffy looking. But adding some bright white sneakers breaks it up just enough.

20. White Button-Up Shirt and Black Mini Skirt

A white button down is a travel staple. Tucked into your black skirt and you’ve got a cute look. Slip on some sneaks so you don’t feel like you’re heading to a meeting.

21. Black Strapless Bodycon Dress and Sneakers

A simple black dress takes up no room in your bag. And heels are not required to wear it. Shoes make it a cute, comfy look for travel. You can always add an extra layer if you get chilly (anything goes)

22. White Oversized Knit Sweater and White Wide-Leg Pants

There is something so luxurious about head-to-toe white knits. It’s soft, it’s forgiving after a huge bowl of ramen, and it looks incredibly polished.

23. Bomber Jacket, T-Shirt, and Leather Pants

Bring out your streetwear for the city days. A basic tee under a bomber jacket looks great, and swapping jeans for faux-leather pants gives the whole thing a very cool, urban vibe.

24. Beige Trench Coat and White Pants

src: instagram.com/nabilagardena

A trench coat is a fantastic travel piece because it’s lightweight but blocks the wind. Worn open over white pants and a tee, you look like you know exactly what you’re doing.

25. White Turtleneck Sweater and White Wide-Leg Pants

If you’re noticing a theme with the all-white outfits, it’s because they work. A white turtleneck with white pants is just a beautiful, clean canvas.

26. Cropped Trench, Mini Skirt, and Knee-High Boots

src: instagram.com/nabilagardena

A cropped trench is a fun alternative to the traditional long one. Over a mini skirt with tights and boots, it plays with proportions in a way that feels very Tokyo-fashion-week.

27. Puffer Jacket and Black Pinstripe Mini Skirt

src: instagram.com/operation_wardrobe

Mix sporty with business. A big puffer coat over a tailored pinstripe skirt is a really fun, unexpected combo. It says you care about clothes but you also care about staying warm.

28. Brown Leather Jacket and White Wide-Leg Pants

If black leather feels too harsh for your style, pack a brown one. It’s warmer and softer, and looks amazing with white pants. It’s a very earthy, approachable look.

29. Black Denim Jacket and Black Mini Skirt

Denim jackets are easy because you don’t have to be careful about them. An all-black denim jacket and skirt combo is tough, easy to look at, and looks good slightly wrinkled.

30. Navy Ribbed Sweater and Blue Jeans

src: instagram.com/pavinprogress

This is what you wear when you’re too exhausted to think. A good navy sweater, the best-fitting jeans in your closet, and the comfiest shoes you can find. This is completely foolproof.

31. Beige Oversized Knit Sweater and Black Wide-Leg Trousers

src: instagram.com/rachelkaejenkins

A good combo for comfort. A big sweater and loose pants. The black trousers avoid making the beige sweater look sloppy.

32. Gray Oversized Blazer and Black Mini Skirt

A blazer makes anything look like an Outfit with a capital O. Throw an oversized gray one over a simple black skirt and a t-shirt and you’ll feel at home strolling through the cool boutiques in Daikanyama.

33. White Polo Shirt and Brown Maxi Skirt

src: instagram.com/sanammughal

Maxi skirts are great for Japan because they cover your legs (modest is generally better for visiting shrines) but are still breezy. A polo adds a cute, preppy touch.

34. Black Oversized Blazer and Black Mini Skirt

Same idea as the gray blazer, but all black is just a bit sleeker. It’s a fantastic outfit for a day that turns directly into a night out for yakitori and drinks.

35. White T-Shirt and Beige Tiered Maxi Skirt

No cap, this is a really romantic look. A tiered skirt moves beautifully when you walk, and a simple white tee keeps it grounded.

36. Black Polo Shirt and White Maxi Skirt

High contrast always gets noticed. A dark top with a bright white skirt looks crisp. If you have the space, pack a pair of colorful flats (like red) to wear when your feet need a break from sneakers.

37. White Peasant Blouse and Black Mini Skirt

src: instagram.com/thefashionsquirrel

A flowy, slightly bohemian white blouse tucked into a structured black skirt. It’s a great mix of soft and sharp.

38. White Embroidered Midi Dress and White Sneakers

src: instagram.com/thefashionsquirrel

If you have one “nice” daytime outfit, make it a dress with some special details like embroidery. It feels lovely to wear, but sneakers keep you grounded in reality.

39. White T-Shirt, White Maxi Skirt, and White Sneakers

src: instagram.com/thefashionsquirrel

The easiest blank canvas. It’s cool in the heat, simple to throw on, and looks incredibly fresh.

40. White Puff-Sleeve Mini Dress and White Sneakers

src: instagram.com/thefashionsquirrel

Puff sleeves are fun and playful. It’s a great shape that requires zero accessories to look like a complete thought.

41. Brown Leather Jacket, White Top, and Black Leather Mini Skirt

Mixing black and brown leather used to be a fashion sin, but now it just looks cool. It’s a bit rebellious and very stylish.

42. Striped Long-Sleeve Top and Black Leather Mini Skirt

A classic striped shirt grounds the edge of a leather skirt. It’s a great balance of nautical and tough, and perfect for your last day of wandering the city before heading to the airport.
